Pigeon pest control, including pigeon nest removal is a vital undertaking. You see, many people view these birds as being harmless. In fact, some even enjoy the sight of them. But what you have to realise is that they can quickly turn into a major headache.
Why pigeon nest removal is so important
The unfortunate truth is that pigeons create many problems for your home or business.
These can include the following issues:
• Infesting attic spaces where they build nests and defecate everywhere.
• Clogging up gutters with their nests, feathers and droppings.
• Blocking water tanks and drains and causing damage with debris from their nests.
• Destroying roofs and blocking your chimneys and exhaust fans.
• Damaging buildings with their droppings which contain highly corrosive uric acid.
• Damaging air conditioning units and systems with their feathers and nests.
• Damaging machinery that is situated on roof tops.
• Causing slip and fall hazards with their droppings.
• Hurting the image of your business with their presence.
In addition to all this, pigeons spread disease.
Something else which makes problematic is their strong homing instinct. Pigeons will always return back to the place they consider home. Once they have decided somewhere is their home, pigeon nest removal can be particularly challenging.
The bottom line is that these birds are inherently destructive. Which is why you may need to routinely carry out pigeon control on your property.
Why pest control have to do pigeon nest removal
Moving a pigeon’s nest on your property may seem like the sensible thing to do. However, bird’s nests any eggs, if any, have the protection of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Only licensed professionals are permitted to move the nest of a wild bird. And then, only under strict conditions.
Pigeon control is a something you need to take care of sooner rather than later. Preferably before they have built a nest. With pigeons, prevention is always better than cure. You ideally want to stop them getting onto your property in the first place. This will save you having to get rid of them later. The longer you wait, the bigger the problems becomes.
Once a problem arises, pest control experts have several ways of carrying out pigeon pest control. And, in addition, nest removal.
Don’t give them anywhere to roost
There should be nowhere for the birds to perch or roost on the outside of your building.
Pigeons prefer ledges they can balance on and other alcoves. You stop them from landing there with spike strips which can be bought at most hardware stores. You can also use pieces of string strung across places where they could roost.
This will prevent them from being able to land anywhere or balance on the roosting spot.
You can also use sloped sheathing. Sheathing which is at a 60 degree angle can be placed on eaves, ledges and windows sills. This will also prevent the birds from landing and roosting. Another way to achieve the same end is by using sticky bird gel.
Stop them getting inside your property
Look for any entrances into your roof or attic, especially between shingles and the sides of your building. Also close off the spaces where they are already roosting with heavy duty pigeon netting.
You should also net off any chimneys, extractor fans and vents. Pigeons love roosting in these places. You can also prevent entry with a stainless steel mesh. These barriers allow airborne elements to escape while preventing pests from getting in. Also surround exterior air conditioning units with bird netting or spike strips.
Another method of pigeon removal is to put up reflective material. When the sun reflects off these materials it glares in the birds‘ eyes and they will go elsewhere.
Remove sources of food and water
Make sure there are no readily available sources of food and water. Keep outside areas clean. Do not leave food waste lying around. Provide convenient dustbins if you run a business that serves food. In residential environments, make sure these have lids which can be firmly secured.
Also make sure that there are no standing sources of water. Outside water tanks should be properly sealed. Gutters and drains should be maintained so that water can quickly run off.
Finally you want to discourage people from feeding birds. At home this is easier. If you are a business owner, all you can really do in this regard is put up some “Do not feed the birds” signs.
