Eco pest control methods for insects are safer, more effective and less harmful to the environment.
You see, most insects are highly invasive and difficult to get rid of. This is usually because of their size, and the fact that they live in dark, hard to reach places. For this reason, powerful insecticides are often used to destroy them.
The problem with insecticides, is that they are deadly to pests but also potentially hazardous to the environment. Not only that, some compounds linger on afterwards, and can cause health problems long after they’ve been used.
For this reason, at Empire, we prefer to use eco pest control methods wherever possible. These greener options are much safer for human health and the eco-system.
Here are some of our favourite eco pest control techniques:
1. Insect traps
One of the most effective eco methods are natural traps. These are basically alluring devices that are baited with non-toxic treats. Usually, the trap is made from a colour that an insect is attracted to or won’t find threatening.
It is recommended to use one trap every 2-4 feet.
2. Heat treatments
This is by far the most effective eco pest control technique. It can be used to kill both crawling insects or flying insects. Heat treatments are non-toxic and long lasting in their effect. This is because adults, larvae and eggs are all killed at certain temperatures, meaning the infestation is eliminated outright.
3. Diatomaceous earth
Diatomaceous earth is especially effective against cockroaches. It is basically the fossilised remnants of diatoms, which are a type of algae. These remnants are extremely harmful to the exoskeletons of insects. This product comes in the form of a light dust which clings to the bodies of insects as they crawl through it. These tiny particles then cut into their exoskeletons, which causes them to dry out and then die of dehydration.
The biggest benefits of this method is that it is a mechanical, instead of chemical. This means that bugs cannot build up a resistance to it. It’s also safe because it is non-toxic.
4. Window sill traps
Did you know that certain spices can be used for eco pest control? Cinnamon, salt, black pepper, paprika, cayenne, clover and bay leaves can all be used to deter insects. This method involves placing spices on your window sills to prevent creepy crawlies coming into the house. You can also place these spices in your cupboards, closets and books shelves.
5. Insecticidal soap and oil sprays
This type of soap is made from unsaturated long chain fatty acids which can actually dissolve the skin of insects. These eco pest control products can usually be found in any garden shop.
Just note that they have no effect after drying. This means that in order to work effectively, the soap must be sprayed directly onto the insects.
Oil sprays work much the same as insecticidal soap, except that they work by suffocating the insects. Because of this, like the above soaps, they must be sprayed directly onto them.
6. Catnip
Believe it or not, catnip can be used to naturally deter most insects. Simply leave small bags of catnip in places where bugs congregate. You can also make catnip tea by simmering catnip in water, and then using it as a spray. Just note that this remedy should only be used in homes where there are no cats because it has quite a powerful effect on them!
7. Borax
You can make a simple eco pest control solution by mixing borax, water and sugar. Soak cotton wool balls in the mixture and then place in it a container.
This method is highly effective against ants because they are particularly susceptible..
8. Citronella
One of the most effective methods for getting rid of mosquitos are citronella candles. Simply place them outside where there is a breeze and these buzzing insects will quickly disappear.
