According to an article published in the Metro, London is now being invaded by a new form of so called ‘Super Ant’ these super 6-legged insects are said to be spreading like a wildfire. On the subject of fire, the ants are said to be Asian super ants also known as ‘fire ants.’
Fire ants first sparked controversy back in 2009 when more than 35,000 were discovered inside a National Trust property in Gloucestershire. It is now thought that the ants are spreading after a colony was found in a house in north-west London sum 100 miles from the first site.
These extraordinary ants have a strange attraction to electrical outlets like plug sockets and power sources. The ants take up residence in these surging settlements which as you may’ve guessed is something of a fire hazard.
Jo Hodgkins countryside adviser at the National Trust speaking to the Telegraph said, “they can easily establish themselves in somewhere like Britain and I would not be surprised if they colonised other areas. They are pretty tough little creatures.”
Like a colony of electrically charged fiends, the fire ants inherently crave electricity just as much (if not more) as a human yearns for food and water. It is said they will go to great lengths to get their electrical fix – chewing through cables and getting inside plug sockets.
Upon inspection of the infestation in Hendon the situation is said to be serious. Compared to common garden ant these electric craving ants are said to be more resilient than normal ants. Hodgkins went on to reinforce this point by saying, “They can easily establish themselves in somewhere like Britain and I would not be surprised if they colonised other areas. They are pretty tough creatures.”
A spokesman for a pest infestation firm who tackled the first infestation described how the ants extend their colonies by leaving the “home nest” a technique known “budding.”
“These nests do not compete with each other although they do compete strongly with other ant species in the area. Nests are found in leaf litter, under paving, and other stones, and around the base of trees.”
