This is such an exciting time of year, and we’re all ready to catch the Christmas spirit. But even though it’s almost Christmas, did you know there are pest concerns that can be related to Christmas decorating?
I’m sure most Londoners will be pulling those boxes of decorations from the garage or loft. But if these decorations have been put away for the past year, many different pests could have found their way inside. Before you open any of your boxes and start freeing your decorations, take the boxes outside. If there are any pests to be found in the boxes, it would be better to release them outdoors rather than into your home.
Signs of mice and rats would include droppings or chewed up decorations, so these are the items you would want to get rid of. Rodents are known for spreading diseases through their excrement, so it’s definitely best to completely dispose of any infested items that you find.
Beware of using food items
Many of you may also have put gingerbread, or chocolate treats on your tree. You may even have stored some of these away with the rest of the decorations. These attract pests like ants and cockroaches, who are always looking for a tasty snack. If you store your decorations year after year it is always a gamble. If you have stored them tightly, there’s a great chance pests won’t have found them. But, if you use storage containers that don’t have a tightly fitting lid this is a mistake. Or if the container is easily chewed through by mice, you could be serving Christmas decorations as food for all manner of pests, for months on end.
Natural decorations?
If you’re planning on getting natural decorations, like a real Christmas tree or a wreath, always check it over closely. Do this before you bring it into the house. Look for any signs of spiders, insects or wild animals that may have made a nest in the branches. Gently shake any natural decorations outside before you take it indoors. This should get rid of any pests that may be inside.
