Summer is the perfect season for picnics with the entire family. Triangular sandwiches, refreshing pop and teeny cakes are all wonderful suggestions for what to pack in your picnic, and parks are particularly popular for this type of alfresco dining experience during this season too.
Unfortunately though, summer is also prime time for pests of all sorts. No matter what pest you are faced with, chances are they will be on a mission to nibble at your finger foods and cause havoc at your picnic.
So, see below for just a few tips for protecting your picnic from pests.
Pick your Place Wisely
Deciding where to go for a picnic is generally an easy task. However, you shouldn’t just opt for the location closest to you. Ideally, you will want somewhere that is shaded and away from open water if possible, to avoid an influx of mosquitos. At the same time, you won’t want to sit too close to flora, as a number of flying bugs and insects can be found around these areas.
So, if possible, try and choose a location that offers an open green space that provides as much shade as you need whilst not disturbing insects’ natural habitats too much.
Dress for the Occasion
In summer, it is all too tempting to pop on the shorts and tees to enjoy a lovely picnic. However, doing so could result in bites, which on their own can be extremely discomforting without being coupled with ants marching along your shins. So, dress for the occasion and expect to come across a fair few creepy crawlies. Long sleeves and trousers will do nicely, and if you’re worried about the heat, opt for light and airy materials such as cotton, linen and chiffon.
Opt for a Table
If possible, try and find a picnic table rather than dining on the grass. This will help you to avoid an army of ants stealing your lettuce leaves, as well as providing a comfortable, raised seating area for the whole family.
A few other tips for alfresco dining (picnic style) include packing your food in plastic Tupperware to keep it pest-free` and avoid wearing perfumed lotions, as this may attract bugs.
Happy picnicking!
