Size, Shape and Colour: These range from 10mm up to 60mm long. The body, which is flat has many segments of which a pair of legs is attached to each one. Antennae are segmented and sensory organs at rear. Mahogany brown in colour generally.
Biology: The female lays 20-40 eggs. These are tended to until they are ready to hatch. This is a simple reproductive process.
Preferred Foods: These are carnivorous and will eat small insects and mites.
Habitat: Mainly outside, however can often enter buildings to see shelter but this is not a good environment for centipedes as once inside they dry out and desiccation takes place. They avoid daylight and scatter when disturbed from under paving or stones.
