World Pet Day was initially set up to show our pets just how much we care about them. For most people, this means new toys, treats or even a day at the pet spa. This year, why not focus on their health and keep them free of pests, too?
When pests invade your home, they don’t just affect the home and family, they also affect our pets, but the fur babies in our lives are often left forgotten when it comes to pest control in London.
For many people, pets are as important as children, so ensuring that they are safe and pest-free can be a constant battle that needs fighting. Fleas are prevalent in warmer weather, cats that roam outdoors will need worming and dogs are often at risk of being bitten ticks when running through the long grass. These are all common pet pest problems, but it’s time to take a minute and consider just how dangerous these pests can be for our pets.
Fleas
- Fleas are more than just itchy and irritating to your pet; they can cause allergy dermatitis, which can lead to hair loss and irritated skin, with cuts and sores
- If a flea infestation is severe, it can cause a lot of blood loss, which can be fatal to younger cats, especially kittens
- Fleas can carry tapeworm larva, which, if ingested, could lead to worms within your pet
Ticks
- In severe cases, tick bites can cause anaemia in your pet due to loss of blood
- Ticks are known to carry Lyme Disease which can cause fatigue, arthritis, aching joints and a painful lameness
- Ticks can also cause Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, which causes a high temperature and lameness
- Ticks can survive for up to three years away from a host and without a meal, and will live off three hosts in a lifetime, so beware if you have multiple pets
- Lyme Disease is also a risk to humans
Worms
- Worms are known to weaken immune systems and can lead to difficulty in recovering from illness and ailments in the future
- Parasitic worms can also cause blood loss
- Also associated with worms is malnutrition and weight loss, for many animals, this can cause the body to shut down
- Worms can cause diarrhoea and other digestive issues
- If left untreated, some parasitic worms can be fatal
- All pets are at risk of these parasites, no matter what their age
