Not only can pest issues become annoying, but they can also be harmful to your health, too. The price you pay to get professionally rid of pests is a very small one in comparison to the potential hazards they can impose on your and your family. It is far better to rid your home or office of these pests immediately to prevent them from breeding and multiplying.
Pests do not belong indoors, so it is always best to ensure they stay out of your personal space – outdoors; where they are meant to be.
It is important to take action as soon as you notice a pesky intruder, be it via a professional or by attempting to tackle the problem yourself. Don’t wait too long for it to become a full-blown infestation, however. Seeing one or two should not be overlooked, as often, seeing the odd one or two usually means there is an infestation close by.
There are, however, a few ways you can reduce the chances of pests intruding your home in the first place, so it pays to be careful in certain areas.
– Checking your home’s exterior for cracks is a good place to start. Small rodents can easily squeeze through these; any crack or hole over half an inch should be filled. If you do happen to find any cracks, then pack them with scouring pads, caulk, steel wool or fill them with poison
– When disposing of household waste, ensure you are tying the bin bags properly and disposing of rubbish from the home more frequently; keeping the waste outside the home rather than inside can significantly reduce your chances of a pest infestation
– If you are living in shared property or multi-unit apartment block, then your individual efforts will be unsuccessful. To successfully rid your home of the critters, the whole building will need to be treated simultaneously
– If trying to get temporarily rid of ants from your home while waiting for the professionals, try using white vinegar spray or Borax, which is safer to use for those with their pets’ safety in mind.
– Fleas are a pest that can be difficult to eliminate, so it is imperative to get rid of any fleas, eggs or larvae from both your pet(s) and from your home, this process may need to be repeated a few times
– One obvious pest deterrent is to avoid leaving food out and uncovered. Always try to refrigerate what you can
– Beware that mice enjoy munching away on cereals and grains; although they’ll pretty much sink their teeth into anything! Storing food supplies in a higher cabinet in sealed containers can help
– If you come across a cockroach, don’t stamp on it or squash it. When you step on it, it can release its egg sac, which can then easily be transferred throughout your home and flooring via footwear. These eggs survive until they are ready to hatch, which can then leave you with a far bigger problem than the one you started with!
– You can get rid of fruit flies with apple cider vinegar. Simply pour this into the bottom of a tall glass or deep bowl, the flies will fly in and drown as they can’t swim.
– Although many areas of your house can still appear normal, it is important to check them regardless. If you have a basement, you could have a termite infestation that you aren’t aware of, slowly eating away at your home without you even knowing.
