June is officially National Camping Month and National Great Outdoors Month – which can only mean one thing! It’s time to pack up your camping gear, stock up on your favourite camp fire snacks and head out into the great outdoors for a peaceful camping getaway, away from the humdrum of everyday life.
The birds are chirping, the fields are being worked on, and there is greenery, trees, and flowers as far as the eye can see. Forget about Glamping, get back to basics with your trusty tent, a camp fire, and some marshmallows and enjoy being at one with nature with your family. You can even take the dog!
Camping is all fun and games, but it pays to be prepared; so if you want to avoid pests like mosquitoes, rats and even ticks gate crashing your camping trip – and eventually your home – then we have some top tips for you this summer.
Avoiding the Pests
- Check the ground where you want to set up camp prior to pitching your tent. You don’t want to discover that ant nest when it’s too late!
- Ensure your pets are well-groomed and be watchful of their grooming habits when camping. Fleas and ticks are rife in warmer weather – particularly in longer grass and wooded areas – so be watchful of scratching and be vigilant when checking their fur for ticks. Missing these signs and taking them home could lead to an infestation in your home! You’re in safe hands, though – Pest Control London is on hand 24/7 should the worst happen
- Avoid using scented aftershave and perfumes when camping, insects and bugs are also attracted to their fragrances!
- Make use of your insect screens – ensure yours isn’t damaged before leaving home. Make repairs as necessary to keep the bugs away while you sleep
- Many pests, especially mosquitoes, dislike smoke from fires so have a campfire going as much as possible if pests are an issue. Never leave a fire unattended and only have one where permitted
- Citronella candles are also a great way of keeping mosquitoes away
- Store your food properly, and keep it sealed to avoid pests congregating
- Dispose of rubbish carefully in designated areas – do not litter! – to ensure rats aren’t attracted to your camp
- Use insect repellent if you react badly to insect bites
- Wear long sleeves and trousers to prevent ticks from biting you, but check your clothing with care as they might be hiding in creases
- Keep your tent clean and tidy
