Creepy crawlies, insects, bugs, spiders and other creatures that have a few too many legs and aren’t cute to look at; have the ability to cause intense fear and dread in human beings. Most people have some form of phobia, particularly when it comes to insects.
The most common form of entomophobia is related to a fear of bees and spiders, which is a largely irrational emotion, given that these insects are the least likely to cause harm – but where there is fear, there is no logic.
The intense fear of insects is part of the reason that there are so many bug control services in our cities, but there are a few insects out there that require you to be cautious!
Deep Rooted Fear
Many people have a deep rooted fear of spiders, bees, and cockroaches. This fear can often take over the individual; resulting in sweating, nausea, shaking, headaches, crying and screaming while running in the opposite direction. Many people feel like the insects are crawling all over them and experience intense itching, which can lead to psychological distress, and even skin infections from scratching.
The Lesser Feared Enemy
While people physically baulk at the sight of spiders and cockroaches, they don’t seem as perturbed by the existence of mosquitoes, ticks and fleas. It is these insects that bite us and suck our blood, that are more likely to pass on diseases and can even cause fatalities; through illnesses such as Malaria and Dengue Fever.
Why are we So Fearful?
So, given that specific insects aren’t half as harmful as our fear gives them credit for, why are we so scared of them? For many, it’s because they look different to what we perceive to be normal, they act erratically and because they invade our personal space and homes.
Some dislike the fact they are synonymous with dirt, grime and bacteria, which can make the skin crawl.
The fact that they move in swarms is also a common fear factor, making them harder to control. For others, it is simply that some insects can cause considerable harm, but many are hard to distinguish so the fear manifests itself across all species of creepy crawlies.
The Simple Solution
While most of the insects we fear are not actually harmful physically, they are still regarded as pests as they can damage and cause destruction in your home, through their eating and mating habits. For that reason, it is important to contact bug control services such as Empire Pest Control to eradicate the issue before it becomes harder to tackle.
