The garden is a haven for all sorts of helpful insects that love to keep your garden looking great. However, with this influx of friendly critters, inevitably comes a dark side – pests.
Pests can be a real nuisance and infestations can spread quickly if the problem isn’t tackled head-on. This means what first started as a few nuisance bugs on your plants could soon escalate into a full-blown garden invasion.
Not only this, but some garden pests can also pose a threat to you and your pet’s well-being. This is why it is so important to deal with the problem quickly and efficiently.
Luckily though, your garden is crawling with lots of insects willing to help. Most of these insects consume and kill off pests, making them the perfect addition to a pest-ridden garden. From the pretty little lacewing to the fungus gnat predator, there are more than just a few insects helping to prevent a flood of pests in your garden.
Below Empire Pest Control have compiled just three beneficial insects for beating garden pests and a couple of examples of the pests they eliminate.
Ladybirds
Often regarded as a homeowner’s favourite little garden lady, ladybirds are extremely helpful to avid gardeners. They tend to feast on pests that insist on destroying plants, like aphids. Other pests they eat include mealy bugs and mites.
Parasitic Wasps
Though the word ‘wasp’ may stand out like a sore thumb to those who fear these insects, rest assured; these teeny insects are absolutely harmless to us. To pests in the garden, however; not so much. These wasps make a habit of laying their eggs in the larvae and eggs of pests like cutworms and tomato hornworms.
Fly Parasite
If you have a compost bin, you will know the annoyance of having a million and one houseflies buzzing around for a tasty treat. However, fear not homeowners, as the fly parasite is here to save the day. They also feast on stable flies and despite common misconceptions, are tiny wasps.
These are just three beneficial insects for beating garden pests. Of course, you shouldn’t rely on ladybirds to clear the area of pests. Instead, we here at Empire Pest Control are here to help.
