Summer’s coming to an end; along with those horrible bugs and pests, right? Wrong! We all seem to have this strange misconception that those creepy crawlies vanish somewhere when the cold season arrives, and you’re not wrong there; they do vanish somewhere. But where would they find somewhere cosy and warm to hibernate in during those chilly months?
Home… that’s right, our homes! The main difference is that instead of these pests hibernating outside, they head to the warmth inside instead. In fact, winter is the prime season in which creepy crawlies choose to invade our homes. For spiders in particular, it is mating season, you will mostly find them lurking around in search for a female spider to comrade with.
Don’t forget, creepy crawlies aren’t the only pests to invade our humble abodes; mice are just as guilty of seeking hibernation in our warm, cosy territory.
Here are three of the common household pests you may come across during the cold season:
- Queen Wasp
Queen wasps usually look for a warm place in the winter to hibernate in and sleep. They will normally look for a place to build a new nest in for when the warm season arrives, and will end up tucking their wings and antennae in for protection. They then fall into a deep sleep where they’ve marked their nest territory for the coming spring.
- Giant House Spider
When the cold months creep in, house spiders do not begin to head towards our home to seek warmth, they were probably already there in the first place. They are generally more visible due to it being mating season. The male spiders are largely roaming around in search for a female to mate with.
- Bed Bugs
The thought of bed bugs barely visible crawling all over us and sucking our blood in the night terrifies the majority of us. The hardest thing to stomach is that their saliva contains anaesthetic properties to numb you before they suck your blood; so you won’t even feel it until you see the tell-tale signs later. They’re pretty clever little mites too, as they know when and where to hide during the day and can tell when you fall asleep, as your breathing pattern changes.
Are you shuddering and itching all over yet? That’s why it is important to put an end to these common household pests, which will happily fester away in our homes sooner or later. Take preventative measures now by calling in the experts at Empire Pest Control.
