Carpet beetles do enjoy being outdoors. But if you give them the chance to get in your home, they will definitely find their way in to find something to eat. Our homes are warm, comfy, and have a brilliant food supply that carpet beetles will definitely be interested in.
About carpet beetles
Once they are inside, a carpet beetle will often feed on items that are made from fur, silk or wool, including wool carpets. They are very attracted to any item that has animal protein on it. The larvae of a carpet beetle are attracted to seeds and pet food. So look out for eggs around your kitchen and pantry, as this will be a great food source for a young carpet beetle. You definitely don’t want carpet beetles or their larvae close to your food.
Carpet beetles are very small, and can easily be confused with bed bugs. They can squeeze themselves through the tiniest cracks to get into your home. They also have wings and can fly around your home too. If you already have insect nests inside your walls or in your chimney, they will happily make their home there for the foreseeable future. Most commonly, they are found in the furniture, clothing, bedding and carpets. So if you notice holes starting to appear in your rugs, it’s possible you have an infestation.
Allergies
Some people can have an allergic reaction to carpet beetles. They shed their hairs, which then become airborne and can cause breathing problems, especially to those who suffer from asthma. They will also create a raised, red itchy rash when these hairs come into contact with your skin, especially if it’s sensitive.
If given the opportunity, a carpet beetle will breed rapidly. This causes a serious infestation in a short amount of time. A lot of damage can happen before you’ve even realised you have an infestation.
